Dear Parents of High School Students, everyday and week your children venture off to school early in the morning for 6 hours everyday. High schoolers deal with the daily struggle of keeping their grades up, athletics/ extra-curricular activities, college applications, driving test and most of all graduating in general. In my opinion a job should not be a main priority in a high schoolers life. My discussion topic will be based off of the positives and the negatives of teens that have jobs during high school.
Positive Factors
Don't get me wrong their are a lot of positives of having a job during high school. For example, a job teaches you how to manage your money and learn the importance of money, it also teaches you respect and responsibility at an early age, and of course it's nice to have extra cash on you for your self. Parents would generally like these traits in their children at a young age so they have a good grip about expenses when they are older.
Negative Factors
What parents don't seem to realize are the negative effects of having a job while being in high school. In my opinion some negative factors would be, your child would get less sleep and wouldn't have enough time for homework, if your student doesn't get enough sleep or do their homework this would start effecting their grades, which would eventually start effecting applying for colleges. All of these negatives would soon start to build up and effect your child's futures in the end.
Recommendation
My recommendation for parents would be not to push your children to get a job so early in high school when they already have a full plate. In my personal opinion, I believe high school should be a hard working enviornment for four years but also the best time of your life with your friends. When you are out of high school that's when the fun should come to a minimum and adulthood should start to be your new reality. You only go to high school once why spend 6 hours of your day in a classroom and the other 8 hours behind a drive thru counter. You have your whole life to work till retirement I find no need for it while your still growing up. If I were a parent myself, I would make sure my child's high school experience was them working to their hardest to achieve what they deserve later in life but also the most memorable time of their life. Take the thought into your own hands and which path do you think would lead to a more successful future.
